In her book, The Power of the Spoken Word, Florence Scovel Shinn states: “Be Strong! Fear not: Fear is man’s only adversary.” She believes our word is our wand, filled with magic and power, and our word is the only weapon we can use to defeat our lions. “You face defeat whenever you are fearful!” Many of us at one time or another find ourselves at the mercy of fear, as in:

• Fear of lack
• Fear of failure
• Fear of loss
• Fear of criticism
• Fear of death

Florence says that fear and worry rob of us of our power because we have lost contact with the “Universal Power House.” It is then that the “lion of apprehension” stalks us with thoughts like: “It’s too good to be true.” and “It will never last.”

“Why are you fearful, Oh ye of little faith? Fear is inverted faith. It is faith turned upside down. When you are fearful you begin to attract the things you fear: You are magnetizing it. You are hypnotized by the race thought when you are afraid.

That’s why the very thing we fear is attracted and magnetized to us. The only way to throw the lion off our scent is to face him by putting our faith and trust into Infinite Intelligence. This means we can not question or doubt our hunches and intuitions, for they are from Infinite Intelligence answering our call. Our place is not to question “how” something we desire is provided, it’s to show faith, knowing that it is already provided.

Infinite Intelligence has given us rules to go by for controlling conditions through thought and word:

• You must be wiser than your enemy thoughts,
• You must answer every negative thought with a word of authority:

Negative thought chant: “Business is dull and money is scarce.“
You immediately reply: My supply comes from God and now appears like mushrooms overnight.”

Negative thought chant: “You’re not appreciated, you’ll never be a success.”
Your immediate reply: “God appreciates me, therefore man appreciates me. Nothing can interfere with my divinely designed success.”

You may have to keep this up for a while but finally you will win out, she tells us, for the truth must prevail. The lion is only fierce because he is feared.

Ask believing and you will receive.

Florence also speaks about the law of strong desire being a seed in the mind that is alive and rooted, and never stops growing. She says:

This law when known, followed out and trusted, leads every individual to mighty and beautiful results. The law followed with our eyes open, leads to more and more happiness in life; but followed blindly with our eyes shut, leads to misery.

Desire is a force best understood and respected. Florence suggests desire is of tremendous vibratory force and must be rightly directed. I can see how desire when used as an agenda could really backfire, but when used along with God’s plan for us, can be remarkable! Florence suggests a statement to help us stop desiring the wrong things and replace them with the right desires:

I only desire that which Infinite Intelligence desires through me. I claim that which is mine by Divine right, and under Grace in a perfect way!

A Few More Affirmations:

• Whereas I was blind, now I can see, my right work, my perfect self-expression.
• Whereas I was blind, now I can see clearly and distinctly the Divine Plan of my life.
• Whereas I was blind, not I can see that God’s power is the only power and that God’s plan is the only plan.

Being wide awake to our good allows us to be trouble-free and full of faith! The truth is, when we understand and are awake to it, such things as loss, lack or failure cease to exist. They are not real anyway and only exist in our imagination – there is no loss in Divine mind.

Florence advises to go out and prove the Principles in our everyday life. Acknowledge me in all your ways and I will direct your paths.” The following is one of my favorites, this one really “clicked” for me. I especially like it because I now understand there is really no power to hurt.

Whereas I was blind, now I can see, there is nothing to fear for there is no power to hurt. I see clearly before me the open road of fulfillment. There are no obstacles on my pathway.
